Mutual Recognition with the Swiss

Posted on 16th July 2025

The British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI), the UK’s official certifying and training body for professional snowsport instructors, and Swiss Snowsports, Switzerland's leading institution for professional ski instruction and training, are pleased to announce a significant development in the recognition of qualifications between the two organisations.

This achievement builds on the recent formal recognition by (the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI) which confirmed the BASI International Ski Teacher Diploma (ISTD) as equivalent to the Swiss Federal Brevet.  This recognition and alignment reflects the shared commitment maintaining the highest professional and technical standards across both systems.

Under the agreed framework, BASI Ski Level 4 (ISTD) instructors can now access opportunities in Switzerland through streamlined processes for obtaining recognition, making it easier for British instructors to work in one of the world’s leading snowsports destinations. Additionally, BASI Ski Level 3 (ISIA) instructors can also access work opportunities after completing the required compensatory modules, further expanding the pathways for professional mobility. This marks a significant step in facilitating international opportunities for instructors.

Tom Cloke, BASI’s Chief Executive, commented: "This renewed agreement will provide greater clarity and a more consistent process for BASI members seeking opportunities in Switzerland’s world-renowned snowsports industry. BASI remains committed to fostering international collaboration and exploring further opportunities for our members in Switzerland and beyond.”

Swiss Snowsports CEO Stephane Cattin added: "The recognition of qualifications between BASI and Swiss Snowsports reflects the shared commitment to quality and excellence in snowsports instruction. It paves the way for increased mobility and cooperation between professionals in our respective countries, strengthening the industry as a whole."

This formal recognition enhances the bilateral relationship between the UK and Switzerland in the snowsports sector, providing new opportunities for professionals while maintaining rigorous standards of training and certification. BASI and Swiss Snowsports look forward to continuing their partnership to support the growth and success of the industry.
