UK and Italy Sign Agreement

Posted on 16th July 2025

The British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI), the UK’s sole official certifying & training body for professional snowsport instructors,  and the Collegio Nazionale Maestri di Sci Italiani (COLLNAZ), Italy’s highest institution of professional skiing, are happy to announce the signing of a new Memorandum of  Understanding (MoU) on 30.09.2024.

The MoU aims to streamline and simplify procedures for the recognition of ski instructors’ qualifications in respective markets.

The signing ceremony, which took place at the British Consulate-General in Milan, was attended by representatives from BASI, COLLNAZ  and by senior staff from the UK Government Department for Business & Trade in Italy

The new agreement states that the BASI Ski Level 4 (also known as the International Ski Teacher Diploma) and the Titolo di Maestro di Sci Italiano are considered equivalent in terms of the technical standards and competence required to successfully pass each systems’ tests and exams, once a compensatory speed test assessment is completed in Italy. This compensatory assessment will use the same standards as those in the Common Training Test required by the Commission Delegated Act (EU) 2019/907 of 14 March 2019.

Speaking at the signing event, BASI’s Chief Executive Tom Cloke said that “I am immensely proud of this achievement by the BASI team, and grateful for the support provided by the Department of Business & Trade, the Department of Culture, Media & Sport, the British Consulate-General in Milan and of course the Collegio Nazionale themselves. Though it has taken over four years to get to this point, BASI will continue to develop & refine this agreement with the Collegio Nazionale and explore further equivalence agreements for our other snowsport qualification levels and disciplines where there is mutual interest. As the UK government embarks upon a reset to relations with the EU, and in the run up to the Trade & Cooperation Agreement review in May 2026, I trust that Ministers are considering the interests of our next generation of sport & education professionals. This means enabling them to work more easily within the EU, be that in Italy or other Member States, using their skills and qualifications.”

Serena Corti, Deputy Consul General and DBT Italy Executive Director, said “I am pleased to host BASI and COLLNAZ at the British Consulate-General for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding which sets a framework for enhanced cooperation between the two associations. I congratulate both organisations on the successful conclusion of the MoU, which was supported by our team at the British Consulate-General in Milan. This shows British and Italian businesses and associations want to keep working together and contributing to the success of the UK-Italy bilateral relationship. At the Department for Business and Trade, we are committed to ensuring UK businesses succeed overseas through exports and that they thrive in a business-friendly environment.
