Qualification Information: Snowboard Level 1 Instructor

This is the entry level course for students who wish to join the BASI Education System. The qualification is for those wishing to find employment in a non mountain environment, i.e. Dry Slopes and Indoor Snowslopes. It is also the 1st stage of the BASI Instructor Level 2.

Before applying for a Snowboard Level 1 Instructor course, students must:

  • Be able to ride confidently on red runs, linking rhythmical small radius turns close to the fall line at a steady pace.
  • Be able to ride red runs confidently in control.
  • Have at least 16 weeks experience of riding on slope and probably more.

Students who are unsure whether or not they are at the necessary standard should ask a qualified BASI/BSA member for advice.

Pre-requisites
The following pre-requisites must be met before attending a Snowboard Level 1 Instructor course.
Students must:

  • Complete the declaration on the booking form and return it to the BASI office.
  • Be a competent or advanced recreational rider
  • Join BASI as an Associate Member
  • Be 16 years of age or older

Training synopsis
Snowboard Level 1 Instructor Qualification consists of the following modules;

  • Safeguarding Children Module
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Technical and Teaching Training & Assessment Module
  • 35 Logged Hours

First Aid
First Aid certificate needs to be issued by an organisation recognised by the Health and Safety Executive.
The course must be a minimum of 2 days or 14hrs long.

35 Logged Hours Snowboard School Experience
A total of 35 hours minimum of teaching/snowboard school experience is part of the Snowboard Level 1 Instructor training course. Teaching Snowboard School experience may include any of the following:

* Understanding how bookings are taken and how people are selected into different standards
* Shadowing experienced Instructors delivering lessons
* Delivering lessons as per the constraints for the Level 1 Licence
* Understanding how customer satisfaction is assessed and how dissatisfied customers are dealt with
* Understanding how the Customer satisfaction procedures improve Instructor and administrational practises
* Taking part in and understanding in house staff training for Instructors
* Understanding how Snowsports Schools maintain Safety standards and maintain their currency of good practise
* Understanding the Risk Assessment process that Snowsport Schools and Instructors take
* Understand Accident and First Aid procedures including accident reporting

Students should provide a breakdown in writing of what they have covered during their Ski School experience and this should be signed by the Ski School supervisor.

Outcomes
Successful students will be issued a certificate and be able to work within a controlled environment with novice and early intermediate snowboarders. On completion of this Licensed Instructor Level students are individually debriefed and advised on the degree of preparation required before presenting themselves for the Snowboard Level 2 Instructor Training Course as well as to their competence to work in the controlled environments of dry slopes and Snow-domes.

Instructor Level 1 Resit Policy
Normally BASI operates a five day resit policy. Specific to The Instructor Level 1 Module, in some cases a one day resit may be recommended by the Trainer, in all other cases a five day resit will be recommended.

Level 1 Re-sits 
Students who book onto, participate in, and subsequently fail a BASI Level 1 course will b e advised by their trainer whether they are required to attend a 1 day re-assessment or if they require to be re-assessed on the whole course.  Any student who fails on either the technical or the teaching element will usually  be advised by their trainer to attend a 1 day re-assessment.  However, those who fail both the technical and the teaching elements of the course will usually be advised by their trainer that they are required to attend the full 5 day course again.

Course Completion
Snowboard Level 1 Instructor licence can only be issued to a student who has fulfilled the following conditions.
The student must:

  • Have completed and passed all aspects of Snowboard Level 1 Instructor training.
  • Hold a current First Aid certificate issued by an organisation recognised by the Health and Safety Executive. The course must be a minimum of 2 days long or 12hrs duration.
  • Have paid the current subscription fee.
  • Have attended the Child Protection Module
  • Have logged 35 hours teaching/ski school experience.

Training Materials
Course fee includes a Generic Manual and Snowboard Manual which will be issued at the start of the course. Students must ensure that they bring their Pre Course information booklets along to the course. A charge of £5.00 will be made for replacements (pre-course information booklet)

Course Dates
Please note that all course dates are on-slope dates, i.e. they do not include travel time to and from the course. Almost all of the courses run on slope from Monday through to Friday but many will start with a Sunday evening briefing. Some courses have optional accommodation and travel packages available.

Insurance
Insurance, it is NOT included in the cost of the course. Students are responsible for obtaining winter sports holidya insurance.  The majority of these policies which are available to the general public, do not cover the BASI course fees.

  • Make sure your policy covers for cancellation or curtailment and medical costs in case of accident.
  • Always read the small print of your insurance policy document.

PLEASE NOTE: After completion of your Snowboard Level 1 Instructor, students will have a minimum pre requisite of 35 hours of ski school experience. This can be obtained either on a dry slope; Snowdome or with a Snowsports school before attending a BASI Level 2 Instructor Training module. The Director of the school is required to sign a letter, on headed paper, stating that these hours have been completed. A copy of this letter is to be sent to the BASI office for verification.
