First Level Instructor

By the end of the course successful students will be able to ride to the level required, have the knowledge, ability and understanding to teach snowboarding in a variety of situations.

Pre requisites
Students must meet the following pre-requisites before entering the training scheme:
  • Be 18 years of age or older (16 years for Trainee Instructor course)
  • Be a competent or advanced recreational rider
  • Meet the self selection criteria
  • Join BASI as an Associate member

Students who are unsure whether or not they are at the necessary standard should ask any qualified BASI/BSA member for advice.

Trainee Instructor Course

To apply for a Trainee Snowboard Instructor course students must:

  • Be able to ride confidently on red runs, linking rhythmical small radius turns close to the fall line at a steady pace.
  • Be able to ride black runs confidently in control.
  • Have at least 16 weeks experience of riding on snow and probably more.

This is a 5 day on-snow foundation Course for all subsequent training and certification. This course will be open to snowboarders who have reached a technical level as described in the guidelines set out above. The object of the course is to familiarise students with the Association and to prepare them for further learning. It is an opportunity for people to find out what snowboard teaching involves and the type of development they will require before attending the Snowboard Instructor Training Course. Thus students will then attend the Snowboard Instructor Training Course with a considerable understanding of:

  • The technical elements of snowboarding
  • The Central Theme
  • The Principles of Teaching
  • BASI

On completion of the Trainee Instructor Course, students are individually debriefed and advised on the best way forward and when to present themselves for the Snowboard Instructor Training Course. Students may be required to repeat the Course.

Note: In special cases it is possible to obtain exemption from the Trainee Instructor Course. Students who hold the ASBI or a similar snowboard on snow teaching qualification may apply for exemption.

NB: From November 2003 students will have a minimum of 70 hours of practical ski school experience with a BASI recognised Snowsports school before attending a BASI Instructor Training course.

Snowboard Instructor
Students attend a 10 day on-snow training course covering the following topics.
  • Technical Snowboarding (practical) A thorough grounding in the snowboard instructor technical syllabus (central theme)
  • Snowboard Teaching (practical)
    Training, analysis and practice of teaching snowboarding using the progression skills from the technical syllabus.
  • Client care
  • Theory and off-snow content
    • Safety and fitness for Snowboarding
    • Communications
    • Lesson planning
    • Technical consolidation
    • Principles and practice of snowboard teaching
Outcome
By the end of the course successful students will be able to ride to the level required and have the knowledge, ability and understanding to teach snowboarding in a variety of situations. On completion of the course students will be issued with a written report. The Snowboard instructor can teach all aspects of the snowboarding central theme up to and including basic turning within the confines of a ski patrolled area.Certification and issue of Snowboard Instructor licence

A licence, which is renewed annually, can only be issued to a student having fulfilled the following conditions:-

  • Have passed all aspects of the Instructor Training.
  • Be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Hold a current first aid certificate issued by an organisation recognised by the Health and Safety Executive. The BASP course has been designed to meet the needs of Instructors, and training will normally be available during the middle weekend of the Snowboard Instructor Training course. The course must be a minimum of 2 days long.
  • Have paid the current full subscription fee.

Resources
A copy of the BASI Manual is included in the Trainee Instructor Course Fee and will be sent to students prior to the course.

Course Dates

Please note all course dates are on-snow dates, i.e. they do not include travel time to and from the course. Almost all of the courses run on-snow from Monday through to Friday but many will start with a Sunday evening briefing. Two week courses have a two day weekend break in the middle of the course. Students may if they wish take this opportunity to attend a BASP First Aid course.

Some courses have optional accommodation and travel packages available.

Trainee Instructor and Instructor Courses - Snowboarding


Insurance


As many BASI students now take annual insurance, it is not included in the cost of the course. Students may use their own insurance (most wintersports holiday insurance policies do not cover your course fee for which they will charge extra) or you can take BASI insurance. BASI can only offer insurance to UK residents there is a seasonal option which will include cancellation and curtailment cover of BASI course fees allowing members who spend the whole season outside the UK to access this cover.

Andorran Technical Enhancement Course

Instructors intending to work in Andorra must take this course in addition to the BASI Snowboard Instructor Training course. This is a requirement laid down by the Andorran authorities and, in combination with 70 hours of practical teaching experience, is validation for a work permit in Andorra.

This 4-day course focuses on developing personal performance and performance analysis in the four strands of Beyond The Central Theme and in New School.

BASI Snowboard Teachers and teaching in France.

Holders of the BASI Snowboard Teacher qualification who are high level performers will be considered on a case by case basis for Right of Establishment as a Snowsport Teacher in France. Verification of their high level performance will normally be based on FIS points from Boarder Cross competition. There will be further modules to complete beyond the Snowboard Teacher qualification to satisfy competency standards for Right of Establishment including a significant standard in teaching a second discipline.

To gain a FIS licence to take part in Boarder Cross competitions contact Snowsport GB. FIS licences should be applied for before mid August of each year for the following winter. Note FIS points vary from year to year so there is no set level of FIS points, therefore each application will be on a case by case basis.
