BASI Level 1 Alpine

The BASI Level 1 Alpine instructor qualification process is broken down into Instructor Training and supplementary courses/experience to gain the BASI Level 1 Alpine certificate. Accreditation has been agreed by BASI for the Instructor Training element only. Based on the JSSI(A) course the route to BASI accreditation is as follows:

a. Level 1 Alpine: Prior to, during or following the JSSI(A) course, students are required to join BASI as a Full Member. This is included in the Accreditation Fee (£125). Students who achieve JSSI(A) and are judged by the Tutor to be of sufficient technical competence to meet the BASI Level 1 Instructor Course standard will be offered the opportunity to accredit their JSSI(A) qualification.

b. Supplementary Courses/Experience: BASI will only issue the BASI Level 1 Alpine certificate, licence and badge to students who fulfil the following condition:

  • Have completed and passed all aspects of the JSSI(A) course.
  • Have paid the current BASI accreditation fee (£125)
  • Hold a current First Aid certificate recognised by the Health and Safety Executive. The course must be a minimum of 2 days long or 14 hours in duration. The Mountain First Aid (MFA - see JSP 419) course delivered at JASMTW(I) meets the required criteria.
  • Have attended training or completed an on-line Safeguarding Children Module. It presents the basic principles of good practise and introduces the concept of long term athlete development. There are numerous providers of this training. Members may complete the BASI on-line course for £25
  • Submit proof of current Criminal Record Disclosure (CRD) – Basic.
  • Having successfully achieved the JSSI(A) award and registered with BASI, instructors are required to log 35 hours of teaching experience, either at a Level 4 centre e.g. as an instructor on Ex Snow Warrior, or at a registered BASI Ski School. A log sheet can be downloaded here. Students are required to provide evidence of what they have covered during the teaching experience. The Ski School Director or OC Trg/CI JSMTC/ATC (if working in a military environment), is required to sign a letter, on headed paper, stating that the 35 hours have been completed. A copy of this letter is to be sent to the BASI office for verification.

Deferrals

Individuals who are deferred are to receive an action plan from their JSAT Level 4 BASI tutor and have 12 months to complete their action plans and prepare for re-assessments. During this period the CRD check, First Aid Training and Safeguarding Children Module may be completed.

Grandfather Rights

BASI have agreed to extend ‘Grandfather Rights’ to all holders of the JSSI(A) award. Whether you are Regular, Retired or a Reserve you may apply for BASI accreditation.

  • Serving personnel wishing to be accredited are to apply to BASI and formally start the process. The initial start-up cost is £125.00. Only after you have become a member of BASI are you to commence the 35 hour log book teaching experience. Serving personnel are to refresh their skills and knowledge under their own means prior to applying to: OC Trg/CI JSMTC or OC/CI ATC for an opportunity to gain log-book teaching experience. The remainder of the accreditation process is as stated above, under section b. Supplementary Courses/Experience.'
  • Retired and Reserve personnel are required to enrol on a 1 day refresher/conversion course. Retired and Reserve Personnel wishing to be accredited are to apply to BASI and formally start the process. The initial start up cost is £125. Only after you have become a member of BASI are you able to enrol on the 1 day refresher/conversion course. Having completed the refresher course and recommended to commence log-book experience, retired and reserve personnel are to conduct their log book teaching experience with a BASI registered ski school. The remainder of the accreditation process is as stated above, under section b. Supplementary Courses/Experience.'

Please Note: BASI level 1 Instructors need to refresh their qualification 1 day every 3 years. The last refresher date, which in the case of serving personnel will be the date they achieved their JSSI, appears on the licence. The BASI licence is only valid where the holder has refreshed and holds a current first aid certificate. Therefore if the JSSI was achieved more than 3 years prior to application to BASI for accreditation, serving personnel will also be required to complete a 1 day refresher, in the same way as Retired and Reserve personnel.
