Since the introduction of the PVG Scheme in Scotland it is no longer possible to apply for an enhanced disclosure through Disclosure Scotland for an instructor/coach position. However if you work as an instructor/coach in England or Wales, your employer should ask you to complete an Enhanced disclosure and this will be done through the Criminal Records Bureau in England. Disclosures in England and Wales can only be applied for through an employer or an umbrella body.
You can apply for an Enhanced Disclosure to the CRB in England through the umbrella body, SAFECIC. Please go to http://www.safecic.co.uk/shopping/crbs to begin the process. There is a charge from SAFECIC for this service.
If you are a member of Snowsport England or Wales as well as BASI, you may have already completed an enhanced disclosure check for them. If so, you can agree for the disclosure information to be shared with BASI. Likewise if you do work for DSUK BSS or Snowsport Scotland you can undertake the appropriate disclosure check for them and agree to have that information shared with BASI. Please see the Information Sharing Policy Statement below:
‘The snowsports organizations BASI, DSUK, BSS, Snowsport Scotland, Snowsport England and Snowsport Wales have an information sharing policy and will share the outcome of the CRB disclosures between the authorized officers of the snowsports organizations. This policy is designed to avoid the need for you to have additional CRB disclosures undertaken for the other governing bodies of snowsports.’
Please note: While BASI accept basic disclosures, the other organizations listed above generally do not, as in most cases they are the employer. For that reason if you are a member of one of the other organizations you should complete a disclosure for them and sign the Information sharing consent form to have the information shared with BASI.
If you don’t fall into any of the categories above, BASI will accept a minimum of a Basic disclosure completed through Disclosure Scotland. This can be done online here - click here- if your current address is in the UK and if you have been living at your current UK address for at least the last 12 months. If you do not satisfy these criteria, you will have to apply using a paper application form (available for download at www.disclosurescotland.co.uk).

Disclosure FAQ's
What if I have a criminal record and this shows on my disclosure?
BASI will conduct a risk assessment on every disclosure that has a conviction or caution of any nature on it, or any other relevant information. All convictions are assessed for their relevancy in respect of safeguarding children and an individual’s suitability to work with children. Old and juvenile offences are not viewed as seriously as recent offences. Minor and financial crimes are usually disregarded. Recent assaults, violent offences with prison sentences, sexual crimes and drugs supply are taken much more seriously.
Will having a previous conviction/caution prevent me from receiving a BASI Licence to instruct or coach?
Having a criminal record will not usually prevent an individual from working or volunteering with snowsport teaching/coaching. BASI will follow its risk assessment policy and consider the relevancy of the conviction/caution with respect to safeguarding children and an individual’s suitability to work with children.
What if I don’t need a licence but still want to be a member?
You can still be a member without completing a disclosure. For those who either don’t teach any more or would just like to be a member of BASI you can be a member and receive a membership card rather than a licence. You will also receive regular BASI news and will have access to BASI Members’ offers. Basically all the benefits without the licence and the insurance for professional indemnity.
Please note: Your membership card will only show your name and member number. It will not show your qualification or ISIA number/stamp, if applicable.
