Course FAQ's

How do I book a course online?

Answer: If you are already a BASI member, log in to your Member Area. How to log in to your Member Area is shown here at http://www.basi.org.uk/content/basi-faqs.aspx  Once you have logged into your Member Area, click on ‘My courses’, DO NOT click on ‘Courses’ at the top of the page. Select your chosen discipline (i.e. Alpine, Snowboard, Adaptive, Nordic, Telemark) or click on Coaching. Click on the course of your choice. On the next page, select the venue and date of course you wish to book from the drop down list and click ‘Book selected option’. Follow instructions to complete the booking and make payment.

Can I book onto the Level 1 and Level 2 Instructor course at the same time?

Answer: No. After you have completed your Level 1 course, to obtain your Level 1 Qualification you will need to gain 35hrs of snowsport school experience, attend a First Aid course and complete the Safeguarding Children Module. You must then contact the office to pay the upgrade from associate member to Full Member. Once you have obtained your Level 1 Qualification, you can then book onto your Level 2 Instructor course.

Can I book on the same course more than once in case I fail the first time?

Answer: No. You must attend the course first and only if you fail the course can you re-book the same course again.

Can I transfer my deposit?

Answer: No the deposit is non transferable/non refundable as per the BASI Booking Conditions.

Is my deposit refundable?

Answer: No the deposit is non transferable/non refundable as per the BASI Booking Conditions.

Is my balance refundable?

Answer: If you cancel less than 6 weeks prior to the course start date, you will be liable for the full "balance of payment" of all your monies owed to BASI for your booking.

Who is the Trainer for my course?

Answer: You will be advised at your welcome meeting who your Trainer will be. (BASI does not give this information to students prior to the course, as this is subject to change)

Do I have to be there on the Sunday?

Answer: This will depend on which course you are attending. If you have booked your course through one of BASI’s European Business Partners, ICE, New Generation or BASS, they will advise you if you need to be there on the Sunday. If your course was booked through BASI, this information will be in your pre-course information.

What is the start time of the course and what time does it end?

Answer: The timings depend on the venue, snow conditions and trainer. Please check the venues page on the website for the expected start time of your course. You will be given a break for lunch and your finish time on the hill will be at the discretion of the trainer. Many courses have a welcome meeting the evening before.

What is the time for the lectures?

Answer: Lectures are around 2hrs every evening from about 16:30-17:00 onwards.

What time does it finish on Friday?

Answer: Friday is also a full day with end of course debriefing in the afternoon. You should plan to be there until at least 5pm.

Is there a test at the end of the course?

Answer: You will be given a written paper to complete on the Level 2 Instructor course, the Level 3 Technical, the Level 4 Technical, the Level 3 Mountain Safety and the Level 4 Assessment courses and you are under continual assessment for the duration of all BASI technical and teaching courses.

Is there a written paper?

Answer: Yes, you will need to complete a written paper on the Level 2, Level 3 Technical, Level 4 Technical, Level 3 Mountain Safety and the Level 4 EMS assessment courses . Please speak with your Trainer if you experience difficulties in this area.

Can I be exempt from the Level 1 Instructor course?

Answer: In order to gain a possible exemption please forward copies of your qualification certificates to basi@basi.org.uk.

If I am a qualified rock climber, does this mean I can get exemption from the Level 1 Instructor course?

Answer: No

Can I hire equipment in resort or do I have to take my own?

Answer: All venues where BASI deliver courses will have hire shops where you will be able to hire equipment, although it is always better where possible to have your own equipment.

When will the course fill up?

Answer: We try to confirm courses six weeks before the start of the course. Within this period if there are not enough bookings to confirm the course we will advise students of the situation and ask them if they would like to wait to see if more bookings come in, or move to another date or venue.

When do I have to book the course?

Answer: As early as possible to avoid disappointment.

How do I know if my course has been confirmed?

Answer: If your course has been confirmed, you should have received your pre-course information by email. Please ensure that you click on all the relevant links contained in that email as they will display essential information such as the meeting point and time with your trainer, venue and lift pass, course contents, etc... If you are in any doubt, all these details are also available on our website. Course confirmation will also show on your members area under ‘Courses Booked’.

What should I do if I’ve not received my pre-course information?

Answer: If your course has been confirmed you should have received your pre-course information by email. It is vital that you click on all the links and download all the information for your course including venue and meeting point. If you have not received it, check that your course is confirmed in your Member Area and then contact the BASI office.

I have a disability. Am I eligible to take part in an Adaptive Instructor course?

Answer: You may be eligible. Please email basi@basi.org.uk to provide details on the nature of your disability. Following consultation with DSUK, we will be able to advise if your disability can be accommodated or not. If your application is successful, it is your responsibility to find a helper who will provide support through the course. Your helper should be of a certain level of skier and ideally have experience of tethering, etc. He/she would have to learn all tasks imposed at the same rate as all other students booked on the course. How do I book the Safeguarding Children Module?

Answer: To book on the Safeguarding Children course, you need to log in to your Member Area. Click on My Courses: a list of courses available for booking show in all disciplines. Select Safeguarding Children Course under Optional. A drop down menu presents you with the course you need to book. Select and confirm until you get to the payment page. Once you have processed the payment for £25, you will usually receive log in details within 24 hours which enable you to access the module online as and when you wish. It normally takes a couple of hours to complete. BASI will automatically update your records once you have completed the course.
