How do I log onto my member area?
Answer: Your Member Area is your own personal profile, you can access it by logging in here.
Key in the below details:
Your email address: it must be identical to the one we have for you in our system.
Your membership number: if you are still an associate member without BASI qualification, you do not have such a number yet and should therefore ignore this field.
Your usual password: if you have forgotten it, you can generate a new one by clicking on ‘Click here if you have forgotten your password’.
Your Member Area enables you to renew your membership online (click on Membership Status, and then Renew Membership. The payment page will follow).
You can also book on courses, view your booking history and qualification status, see your course results and reports, pay for due balances, contract BASI insurance, access the annual offers, etc...
How do I book the Safeguarding Children Module?
Answer: To book on the Safeguarding Children course, you need to log in to your Member Area. Click on My Courses: a list of courses available for booking show in all disciplines. Select Safeguarding Children Course under Optional. A drop down menu presents you with the course you need to book. Select and confirm until you get to the payment page. Once you have processed the payment for £25, you will usually receive log in details within 24 hours which enable you to access the module online as and when you wish. It normally takes a couple of hours to complete. BASI will automatically update your records once you have completed the course.
When do I have to pay my membership/subscription?
Answer: At the time of booking your Level 1 Instructor course you are required to join BASI as an Associate member and pay the associate subscription fee and then your membership will be due on the 1st of October every year.
How do I pay my membership/subscription?
Answer: You can pay online via your members area, posting a cheque to the BASI office, calling the office with a credit/debit card or by setting up a direct debit(direct debit forms need to be in the office by mid August).
What do I do If my membership has lapsed for a year or more?
Answer: Members who have lapsed for a full membership year or longer must go to their Member Area and click on 'Membership status' on the first page (this section will be highlighted in red).
Click on 'Renew Membership' and you will be prompted for payment of a £35 rejoining fee and the current year’s subscription fee.
This only applies to full members. Associate members are not liable for the rejoining fee.
When will I receive my Level 1 qualification?
Answer: Once you have successfully completed your Level 1 instructor course and provided BASI with proof of 35hrs snowsport school experience, a copy of a current first aid certificate, Child protection/Safeguarding Children certificate and upgraded to full membership of BASI, you will receive your Level 1 Instructor qualification certificate and badge.
To receive your licence you will need to forward a passport sized photograph and a copy of your current Criminal Record Disclosure. This qualification allows you to instruct in a controlled environment only, (not within a mountain environment).
Do I need to provide a Criminal Record Disclosure?
Answer: To receive an Instructors licence you need to complete a Basic Criminal Disclosure, however if you anticipate regulated work with children or vulnerable groups in the future, you should join the PVG Scheme (for Scottish residents only). You may attend courses without the Disclosure.
How long is my disclosure certificate valid?
Answer: According to the Disclosure Scotland website disclosure certificates have no validity period. This is to say the information provided on the certificate is correct up until the date it was printed but obviously it cannot make apparent any new information that may arise on the individual after this date.
However, it is recognised as good practice to have a policy of re-checking existing employees and the recognised period of validity is 3 years. It is even more relevant for BASI as in most cases we are not the employer and members may be changing employer or working for themselves and not being re-checked. The Home Nations Governing Bodies (i.e. Snowsport Scotland, Snowsport England, Snowsport Wales and BSS) also recognise 3 years validity for disclosure certificates.
Does BASI accept disclosures obtained for other organisations?
Answer: Yes, as long as the certificate has been issued in the last 3 years.
Where does BASI stand in relation to the new PVG Scheme in Scotland?
Answer: BASI members are advised that a basic criminal record check is still acceptable but if they anticipate regulated work with children or vulnerable groups in the future, they should join the PVG Scheme. This is for Scottish residents only.
Following correspondence with the Compliance Manager, BASI has been advised the following regarding ‘regulated work’:
“If an instructor trains the general public and occasionally teaches children this would not be regulated work as it would be incidental.
If the instructor trains the general public but has a class aimed at children this would be regulated work with children – the same would apply to protected adults.”
