NEW! BASI Requirement for Criminal Record Disclosures
The BASI Board would like to thank you for helping BASI follow “Best Practice” and ensure that all members issued with licences in the future have been checked by Disclosure Scotland.
However following recent correspondence with Disclosure Scotland and a subsequent meeting, it has been established that the majority of BASI members are no longer required to complete an Enhanced Criminal Records check. As of now, Disclosure Scotland will accept basic disclosures for members of BASI who wish to receive a licence. This is great news as applying for a basic disclosure is a much simpler process which can be done online or by using the paper application form.
BASI will now accept Disclosures completed for other organisations, from members who wish to receive a licence.
From 1st June 2009 members applying for disclosure with any of the following organisations, can sign a Policy Consent Statement form confirming that he or she consents to information contained within their disclosure being shared between the authorised officers of Snowsport organisations (BASI, DSUK, Snowsport GB, Snowsport England, Snowsport Scotland and Snowsport Cymru/Wales).
Enhanced disclosures will still be required for BASI employees such as office staff who are also involved in training and coaching children, and BASI trainers. BASI will also be able to apply for enhanced disclosures on behalf of our affiliate ski schools and slopes.
Important Note: If you have been a resident for 5 years or more in a foreign country, you will have to go through the disclosure process for the country in which you reside. If residency is less than 5 years, then you are required by BASI to go through the Disclosure Scotland process.

BASI Trainers/Employees:
Apply for Enhanced Disclosure
Process:-
Contact BASI and request an application form for an Enhanced Criminal Record Disclosure. (Downloadable form on the website is not usable for Enhanced Disclosure). Tel: 01479 861717
Complete the form including the payment details and ensure that you tick the box for enhanced disclosure.
Ask a BASI Trainer (who is a counter signatory) to countersign the application (this service can be done in the BASI office for you and requires you to send your completed form ready for countersigning along with your original ID documents which will be sent back to you directly by secure post).
Note the Counter Signatory is required to confirm your identity therefore you should provide evidence of your identity as described in the application form.
Send your application to Disclosure Scotland with payment.
Disclosure Scotland will send you a copy of the disclosure and one to the Disclosure Officer at the BASI office.
The BASI Office will update your records and your licence will be posted to you.
Please note all Disclosure information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and any disclosures will be destroyed as soon as they have been processed or when any enquiries are completed.
What if my disclosure shows items on my record?
Should a Disclosure show that an individual has a criminal record this does not automatically mean that, that person will not receive a BASI licence (some items on a disclosure will not be regarded as a risk in this area). The BASI Child Protection panel will be informed and could contact that person. The Panel would make a risk assessment on whether that individual was a risk to children. All aspects of this process would be done with the strictest confidentiality.
Do I need to do another Disclosure for my employer (Snowsport School)?
BASI is an Umbrella Body therefore any Snowsport Schools who have joined the BASI Affiliate Membership Scheme (specific criteria must be adhered to in order to become an Affiliate Scheme Member) can accept the BASI licence as proof of having done a Disclosure with Disclosure Scotland (your employer may however ask you to do a new disclosure).
What if I don't need a license but still want to be a member?
You can still be a member without completing a disclosure. For those who either do not teach any more or would just like to be a member of BASI you can be a member without a license. You will receive a membership card rather than a license, regular BASI News, BASI Directory, and Members Offers. Basically all the benefits without the license and the insurance for professional indemnity. (Please note your membership card will not show your qualification/s or if applicable ISIA number).
