The British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) was conceived in 1962 and formally constituted in January 1963 in Scotland when the first mountain ski resorts were emerging in Scotland (Glencoe, Cairngorm (Aviemore), Glenshee). BASI emerged to meet a need to provide a professional, consistent teaching progression for the increasing numbers of people who were attracted to the emerging sport of skiing.

BASI’s teaching philosophy is based on safety, enjoyment and learning and its instructor qualifications are recognised throughout the world.  Today BASI trains and licenses professional instructors across five disciplines: Alpine skiing, Snowboard, Telemark, Nordic and Adaptive including performance Coaching. BASI has over 6,000 Members teaching in over 38 countries world-wide.

BASI Members and the Training body have knowledge and insight that covers the breadth and depth of the snowsports industry; include Olympians (past and present), International Mountain Guides, and experts in Mountain Safety, Ski School Directors (UK and International), Tour operators, winter sports retailers and insurance providers.   BASI is a member of the International Ski Instructors Association (ISIA) and the Ski Industry of Great Britain (SIGB).
